Anna's hummingbirds are super busy right now. The males are announcing their territories and mating. The females are busy building their nests and laying two eggs. It won't be long before the babies are born. It seems such an odd time to begin the breeding season. The migrating hummers are long gone, but the Anna's has found a way to survive on insects and some winter blooming flowers in our temperate climate here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Even so, with the rains and occasional freezing temperatures, it is truly amazing that they can raise their young at this time of the year.
